Why Ovenbird
In Argentina and across the River Plate, the hornero, the ovenbird, builds its home out of mud. One small clump at a time, the same way every time, with its partner. The result is so solid it outlasts the season. That is how we think a team's processes should be built, followed and taught.
The bird
- One clump at a timeThe hornero builds its nest from small clumps of mud, laid one after another until the dome closes. Nothing is skipped; each layer holds the next.
- Built to lastA finished nest weighs four to five kilos and measures 20 to 25 cm across, made by a bird of about 55 grams. During nesting its salivary glands grow so the mud binds better.
- Shared work, clear rolesBoth partners build. Once the eggs are laid, the male takes his turn and incubates them for about fifteen days. A handover, done right.
- Chosen by schoolchildrenIn 1928 Argentine primary-school pupils voted the hornero their national bird, in a poll run by the newspaper La Razón and the Asociación Ornitológica del Plata.
What it means for the product
- The next step, in orderThe hornero never lays the roof before the walls. Ovenbird tells each person the one next step of the documented process, with the paragraph quoted.
- Processes that holdA nest that survives storms is built from the same method every time. Ovenbird keeps the document as the default path and says when a newer decision overrides it.
- Handovers that don't dropOne partner builds, the other incubates. Ovenbird names the owner of each stage and keeps open items on someone's next step.
- A teacher in the familyIts North American namesake sings a call birders write as “teacher, teacher, teacher”. Every process in Ovenbird becomes a short course, with refreshers before people forget.
The mark
The mark is the hornero's nest: a dome with its doorway to one side, on a branch, drawn in white on Ovenbird blue. It stands for something built step by step, and built to hold.
